Power your PC?

By Playboi

I was randomly checking the power settings on the gyser that I have at my house. It said something like 1.1kwh or something for 24hrs continous running. Though its a small one, I guess a bigger one will cost much more.

I did some research on this, and guess what I found. Well, a normal 25ltr one would cost around Rs 3-5 a day for 24hrs running. Simillarly, a 35 ltr one would cost say around Rs 6-7? Hmm. Sounds interesting?

Well, lets do the maths.

Suppose you have 4 geysers per floor of a hotel. And there are 4 such floors. People use these geysers. Now, lets assume that since people will be using it a lot, lets say that they actually consume thrice the amount. That is Rs 18 per day, and if that hotel is getting power on industrial rates, it would cost almost twice, so, round of to Rs 30 a day per geyser.

So, the amount spend on geysers is 30*4*4*30 (30 days month) = (a wooping) Rs 14 400.

Now imagine a big internet cafe, with at least 200 PCs on at any given time. (more in the day, less in the night, taking an avg here.). I found (and also this)out that PC might use anywhere between 150-250 watts of power. Lets do the maths again, shall we?

So, the equation this time is

200(avg of 150-250) * 200 * 24 * 30 = 28800 kwh per month.

again, industrial rates applied, it would be around Rs 7 per unit(i think). So, the amount per month on electricity is 7*28800 approx. Rs 2L per month.

Sounds too much? ok, lets say there are only 100 PCs on at any give time. So, a fair Rs. 1 L per month.

So, the manager or the caretaker who said that geyser is causing the major electricity bill is a fool? Hmm, maybe. If my maths is right, he is. Please do tell me if I made mistakes.

Other news?

Nah, its a weekend. No offical news. But, yeah, do go and watch Pyar Ke Side Effects. Must watch movie

PS: The internet cafe/hotel is nothing but the OBH

Good stats….. whatever you say our wardens are not in a position to listen

I have a doubt abt the number of computers switched on at a time…people leave their pc without turning off …. so I think only in OBH it will be 300 (consider the double rooms :( )

hope atleast this makes people to switch off their computers when they dont use their pc for more than an hour.

an average OBH student has 3 hours of classes (4th, 3rd, mtech etc etc) and sleeps, say, 5 hours a day … so total of 8 hours a day can be saved by a student in OBH (going with ur calculation )

    so 8*200(students)*200*30 = 9600 kwh per month

i.e around 66 thousand bucks a month that we can save (all this assuming 200 students)

    am i wrong??
